Why study Dance at Madonna University?

Madonna University’s unique dance programs offer a variety of components for a career path as a dancer, teacher, or multi-skilled professional. The Bachelor of Arts degree is offered for students who wish to major in dance, but would like to take advantage of the Liberal Arts academic experience. Our program as a whole is designed to foster critical thinking, communication, and ethical decision making necessary for success in today’s world, while also nurturing each student as a creative artist and maintaining the highest standards.

  • It is designed for students who want to continue their dance education and pursue a designated minor in a complimentary area of study.
  • It will provide a personal learning environment designed to incorporate the diverse interests and needs of each student.
  • It is professionally oriented and emphasizes broad performance experience. All majors/minors are members of the MUse Dance Ensemble.

A total of 45 semester hours in dance technique and 11 semester hours in support courses are required. Dance majors seeking a BA/Dance degree must maintain a cumulative 2.75 in all dance technique and related required courses.

Admission Requirements:  Acceptance into each of the dance programs is based on a formal dance audition. The audition is held by members of the dance faculty, generally four times throughout the academic year. Proficiency at the intermediate level in the ballet, modern or jazz dance idiom is required for acceptance as a dance major/minor. Prospective dance students may not audition until they have completed the Admissions process, and have been accepted into Madonna University’s academic program. All incoming dance majors will be designated as Bachelor of Arts/Dance degree candidates.  After the completion of 14 semester hours of dance requirements, students may petition for an interview with the dance department faculty and request to change their academic program to the Dance Performance major. Based on the results of this process, the dance faculty may approve the request.  If the request is denied, the student will have an opportunity to schedule a second and final interview to petition for change of academic program, the following academic year. Transfer students must complete a minimum of one semester at Madonna University.

Features of the Program: The dance program is professionally oriented and emphasizes broad performance experience. All majors/minors are members of the MUse Dance Ensemble. The dance company performs informally on campus, off-campus in lecture demonstrations, and in two full-scale proscenium dance concerts per academic year. In addition, the department of dance participates in the American College Dance Association (ACDA) conference.

Specific Program Information:  Opportunities to interact and study with international instructors and choreographers are offered throughout the academic year to the Madonna undergraduate dance major/minor. These affiliations with master artists often lead to opportunities in the professional field for Madonna dance department graduates. The dance department offers membership to the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) sponsored by the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) for all eligible dance majors and minors. Credit may be granted for professional experience through the portfolio assessment. A limited number of talent scholarships are granted each academic year. Awards are granted upon the completion of the admissions process and at the time of audition. Talent scholarships may be combined with academic awards.
